About Wondering how difficult it would be to move from Portland to Minneapolis in mid Dec

Wondering how difficult it would be to move from Portland to Minneapolis in mid Dec?
I am planning on moving for work to Minneapolis, Minnesota from Portland, OR , most likely driving a U-Haul Ford Van.. I am comfortable to driving in the snow/ice growing up in the high sierra nevadas but the Van is not 4WD but I have a personal set of chains that would fit just in case..I heard North Dakota can be hazardous and induces insanity with the straights...and since I am planning on taking the trip straight across the Northern US through Montana and the Dakotas I am wondering if it might be better to take an alternate route? if anyone has done this or has any advice it would be greatly appreciated..

Does anyone know of any Target in the Minneapolis area that the FLOW team works the 4am shift & NOT overnight?
Me and my roommate work for Target and want to move to Minneapolis to work, but need an early morning store to transfer to. Does anyone happen to know of one? Even better...does anyone know of one that needs a backroom lead b/c my roommate is one right and would like to transfer as the same?

What parts of downtown Minneapolis would be safe to live in when walking to the financial district for work?
For example by the metrodome or by the river....Thanks for the help with this

By the river is better than by the dome anywhere along the river from the wharehouse district to down by the new guthrie is all good...especially by the stone arch bridge...the other side of downtown is not too bad either, anywhere between 11th and loring park although your walk will be further...i like the river side better...laurel village is kind of between the two and that would be pertty close for you.
2 :
First, anything can happen anywhere...you have to be careful anywhere, but you are safe in Downtown Minneapolis (for the most part) during the day. There's more cameras than ever before. At night, be aware around Hennepin Ave and 1st Ave. Now you don't specify if you are trying to find somewere to live, so I have a links for you for the Minneapolis Police Dept crime stats. Downtown is the 1st Precinct--so pull up that report, and there's several other areas to check...all interesting! Tried to find you an apartment on Craigslist, but you'll have to look for yourself...the one I found was too $$$. (3rd link) 4th link...an idea for SEVERAL units... Would rather live by Loring Park (south end of the Nicollet Mall.) More stores, and people. Stop me! Happy hunting!

About Commute from Maple Grove to Minneapolis

Commute from Maple Grove to Minneapolis?
We are about to relocate to MN and are thinking of buying in Maple Grove. One of us will be working downtown Minneapolis and the other in St. Cloud. Everyone says the St. Cloud commute will be better even though it's much farther. Is traffic from Maple Grove into downtown really THAT bad? How long would that drive take, on average, during the week?
Commuting - 1 Answers

if you take 494, the traffic will be bad especially on the drive home. I go into downtown MPLS from Minnetonka so my drive isn't bad unless they're doing road construction, but if you're going the 494 to 394 route from Maple Grove I know it will be a pain getting home. Good news is that they are planning a transit corridor to go up to the northwest suburbs, but that could be awhile until it is finally constructed.

About Can I deduct travel expenses to get to work

Can I deduct travel expenses to get to work?
I fly weekly and stay in a hotel for 4 nights with rental car for work. I live in Minneapolis with my family where my wife works and now I work in Milwaukee and have to be there each week. I spend about $600 a week commuting to work. I am wondering if I can expense that from my taxes.
United States - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
When you accepted a permanent job, you tax home moved. This is called commuting and not deductible. The exception is if the job was temporary, expected to last less than a year and actually does last less than a year. (And even then, you are easily audited and subject to AMT.)
2 :
No. It's your choice to live far from work.
3 :
If this is your "permanent" job location, then your travel is called commuting. No matter how much you spend on commuting, it isn't deductible. If your employer has asked you to work in Milwaukee for a few months, then the expenses are deductible but are in a class of deductions that must exceed 2% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) before you get a tax benefit. Also, if your income is high enough, you may be taxed under the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) system. Under the AMT, miscellaneous itemized deductions such as unreimbursed employee business expenses aren't deductible. If your employer has asked you to work temporarily in Milwaukee, you are better off if you get the company to reimburse your expenses. I hope this helps. Gary
4 :
if this is a temporary, short term, less than a year position the expenses you incur for lodging, transportation, meals and other incidentals are deductible for this temporary position commuting expenses are never deductible

No. You are out of your mind if you think you can.
2 :
I'm not from minneapolis but there is no reason you can't. Just get the right clothes and equipment on your bike. Here is a bike forum thread on riding in the snow in Chicago. http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=432040
3 :
Of course you can. They do clean ice and snow off up there. Wear a lot of clothes
4 :
Definitely. People will think your nuts because they can't think of doing anything different than the norm. Use icebike.org for a good list of things to think about before getting started.
5 :
Im in South Dakota, and I do it! Dress WARM, wear gloves, keep the face covered. Mountain Bikes are easiest in the snow, even if a bit heavier. Give the bike a good rinse if you ride after they salt the streets! keep the chain well lubed!
6 :
I biked to work every day for three years in Chicago. Some water repellent pants covers are key. But Minneapolis is a different beast from Chicago. I've been there in February when 4 feet of snow covers everything that isn't ploughed. So here's your option...it isn't the cold that's the problem. That can be overcome by the right riding gear/clothes. It is whether you are comfortable riding in the road year round at the risk of being dinged by a sliding car (happened to me once in Chicago). I'd say go for it. And I have a bit different take on the Mt Bike vs road bike that one of the above commentors. I found that the narrow tires on the road bike cut the snow/slush more easily than wider knobbies while riding on the road. A sidewalk with snowpack, though, needs the wide tires. Keep it in a lower gear so you can spin more easily if your tires are slipping.

About how is it to live in downtown minneapolis

how is it to live in downtown minneapolis?
I am moving to Minneapolis soon and will be working in Woodbury. I am single and hence do not really want to live in a suburb. I was wondering how is it living in St. Paul or Minneapolis downtown. St. Paul would be much closer to work but if Minneapolis downtown living is much better then I would not mind the commute. Please help. Thanks.

Honestly I wouldn't live downtown. The city is nicknamed "Murderapolis" for a reason, plus your housing will be much more expensive downtown. I'd probably choose a suburb or a nearby city of Woodbury...because Minneapolis to Woodbury is about 45 minutes with no traffic. Check out Oakdale. It's right by Woodbury.
2 :
There are cool neighborhoods around the U of Minn..Not much downtown at night except homeless people.
3 :
Wow, Downtown Minneapolis is not that bad. If the nickname of Murderapolis exists, it is because of North Minneapolis, not downtown. Given that, downtown isn't good enough to live there if you need to go to Woodbury. It isn't a 45 minute drive without traffic but it's a good 25-30 minutes. Live cheaper and use the extra money for cabs to woodbury.

About Recommended apartment complexes in Minneapolis, MN

Recommended apartment complexes in Minneapolis, MN?
I am moving to Minneapolis to work for a large employer there and I need to find a well-recommended apartment complex. I have read the different magazines and talked to some managers on the phone. However, I would like to hear from people who have lived/live in the apartment complexes in Minneapolis, St. Anthony, Plymouth, Fridley, Oakdale areas. My ideal match would be one with good sound insulation, washer/dryer in unit and heated parking. Thanks!

What I would suggest is email me the address of your employer and I will search a 15 radius around the address for you and give you the names of places. I'll also need to know what you want to spend a month, # of beds and baths, etc. alterfemego@yahoo.com

My first thought was Craigslist (1st link below to short term stays.) You don't say what part of town you would be looking for, but the next few links are places I would consider for you.... IF you really want to stay at a hotel (near where you will be working) contact the hotel's reservation manager DIRECTLY and say that you were thinking about staying 2 months at least and wondering what the BEST price they could do for you. Be nice....More flies with honey... Don't commit to any place hotel or sublet until you see them and review all your options! (I used to work in hotels so ANYTHING is possible. If you really want a certain hotel and you are not getting anywhere with the reservation manager, call the hotel's manager! ) They give bonus consideration for paying upfront--at least a week's worth of time. On average, for a GREAT deal, you should pay about $50+ a day--that's why a sublet would be better. Oh! If you do choose a hotel, cozy up to the front desk staff because they will get you better rooms, etc. Get a hotel that serves breakfast as a comp too. If you have a car, you might want to bypass the downtown Minneapolis hotels due to parking fees--as high as $20+ a DAY! The last link is to Minneapolis so you can explore some more things! What better time to be in Minneapolis! Have fun!

About I just had some car work done in Minneapolis, and they charged me $90/hr for labor

I just had some car work done in Minneapolis, and they charged me $90/hr for labor! Is that a fair price?

Maintenance & Repairs - 9 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Yes they go by Nation time schedules and figure off of that. If the book says it takes 2 hrs to fix something and it takes longer you should only be paying for the 2 hrs. They use a National figure so that you can get an estimate before telling them to start the work and you know the cost up front...Good Luck
2 :
Well it all depends on what mechanic at that particular auto repair facility worked on your car, you know some mechanic's labor might be higher than others due to the job they are doing. Plus thats how they make their money in their labor.
3 :
It isn't out of line at all. Most shops charge within a few dollars of that per hour, most dealerships charge that or more. If you can, buy a chilton guide or service manual for your car, and follow the step by step directions to repair it yourself. Granted, you can't do everything, but what you can, saves you big bucks.
4 :
yup ive heard of mechanics charging up to 130 bucks an hour
5 :
No - anything more than 50.00 per hour is a rip off. Nobady is that good that they deserve 90.00 per hour, unless you have a Lambo, Ferrari or something along those lines.
6 :
I don't know about Minneapolis, but here in Calgary, Canada, The average shop rate is about that, the average shop rate (including dealerships) in the area I work in is about $105. The shop I work at is at $98/hour, at the top of the private shops. (I say its about the same because of the exchange rate). Its really hard to say what a fair price is. If I go to a smaller city, or a city thats not as rich as calgary, the shop rate may be down to $60/hour. Or if i go to a city thats a lot richer then calgar it may be up at $115/hour. Shop rates very by city to city, and then area to area (within the city). These are questions that are quite hard to answer. Someone might be used to paying $40/hour and is saying you're getting ripped off, and then you'll think you're getting ripped off, when you're really not. You may have gotten a shop with a cheaper shop rate then others, and you're actually getting a deal. If you're worried about shop rates, call around to other shops in your area and ask why they charge per hour. You're going to get such a wide varity of answers here its probably going to confuse you. Call around to shops in your area ask for the shop rate, and if the shop you went to charges within the same price range, I wouldn't worry about it, even if they are at the higher end of the price range. However if they are quite more expencive then the others, you may want to give them a call and ask why they are.
7 :
Yes, $90 per hour is a very fair price in a large city. Why is labor so high? Cars are getting more complex with computers and electronics, and it's harder to find people who can work on them. Today's auto mechanics are very smart people. Since a bad mechanic can cost a shop (and their customers) money, shops must pay a premium to get the good ones. This cost is passed on to the consumer. Anyone who says that a mechanic should not charge more than $50 per hour is either not a mechanic, or they are so old school that they don't understand the tools and technology required to work on modern vehicles.l
8 :
Well, I have had several NEW vehicles over the past few years that have had MAJOR mechanical problems, and ALL were dealt with at the dealership. I have never once seen a labor rate higher than 50$/hr. And they were ALL A.S.E. certified new car dealership repair shops !
9 :
I work in a shop in Minneapolis. That is slightly on the low side of the going rate in this area. It has nothing to do with how good the shop is or anything like that. It has to do with keeping the doors open. At less than $90/hour in this market a shop would be bankrupt in weeks. Taxes, insurance, lease rates, property taxes, licensing, utilities, salaries, health care costs, etc, etc, etc... all go in to figuring out how much a shop has to charge to stay alive. That can vary widely. Head out of the cities into rural markets with much lower costs of living and the hourly rates can drop substantially. One of the shops under the same ownership as the one I work at is about 40 miles outside the cities and they charge $20/hr less because the cost of doing business in that small town is so much less.

Most restaurants and retail stores hire 16 year olds for part time jobs. Also recreational businesses like bowling alleys, movie theaters, arcades, golf courses, etc. Temp agencies also have some part time temporary job listings. Check to see if there is a Labor Ready office in your area. They have a lot of temp jobs. Go to the office at your high school and ask if they have a work study program and how to apply. Local businesses team up with the schools to give students entry level jobs. Go to http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ and look under the part-time and ETC categories in the jobs section and labor in the gigs section.

Uptown might be better for you because of the huge bus hub at 29th and Hennepin (#6,12, 17, and 21 and a few more) all roll through there. Depending on where you settle, there are two grocery stores--Rainbow Food Store on 28th and Dupont and Lunds on Lake Street a few blocks west of Hennepin. Uptown is a bit tamer that it was even a few yeara ago. (Have lived here for over 20 years.) There are rare moments of volience, but I still feel safe. Another reason to live Uptown is the lakes are close. NE Minneapolis is coming into its own with MANY more restaruarnts and clubs than 5 years ago. I comes down to finding a safe, clean, and reasonable place to live....so to find an apartment go to craigslist (see link) and with the 1st of the month coming up, you will be able to find several places. Happy Hunting!

Does anyone out there know kimberly moore from colorado springs co.?
we spent our first vacation in colorado springs with who we thought were our friends. we had to leave some of our things there, we sent them the money to cover the cost to send it to us in iowa, but we are still waiting (over 6 months) for our belongings to be mailed to us, and she still has the money also. If anyone knows her would you please tell her to send us our things. we have tried and tried to get ahold of them but no luck. this is the only option left. she works for a lady that does red hat stuff, kim's name with them is princess jewels. all we wanted was to get our clothes and some personal items back. we even sent the money they would have needed to mail the box to us and we also sent her $10.00 dollars for her time. the box was all ready to go when we left for home all she had to do was take it to the post office and mail it. so please if anyone out there knows her ask her to mail ken and diana's things to them.

About Why does no one take online dating seriously in Colorado Springs, Colorado for

Why does no one take online dating seriously in Colorado Springs, Colorado for?
I've tried to heed some of the suggestions given to me here on YA due to my severe troubles with respect to finding a g/f here and it still isn't working out for me. Specifically, I've tried contacting several women who have share similiar characteristics and traits like myself, but all to no avail. Why are people so backwards, unfriendly, and anti-social for in this town? Not only that, but I've come to an interesting conclusion about this city. That is the fact that a large majority of the women in this town are either Air Force or Army wives. The other large percentage of women here in this town are Army and Air Force brats that are ALREADY engaged or MARRIED by the time that they are freaking 19 years old! Also included within the group of women that are already engaged by the age of 18 or 19 are those young women that have lived here for their entire lives and end up marrying their high school sweethearts. Something is wrong with this place! Women who live in normal cities such as Denver, Raleigh, Nashville, Atlanta, Dallas, etc are not nearly as cliquish as these women are here and tend to be open to dating someone who wasn't born and raised in one of the aforementioned cities. This city is backwards in that regard! As a single male living in Colorado Springs due to formerly having a job in the IT field, I am NOT accepted by the women here because I didn't go to high school here and am not a native. Seriously, I believe that the Utes put some sort of a curse on this town because the people who live here give off a very negative, unfriendly, and anti-social vibe that permeates with negative energy and I AM NOT making that up!

How can a 15 year old girl make money in Colorado Springs?
I need money FAST. Lots of it. About $300. Nowhere close to where I live is hiring, and you have to be 16 to work at most places anyways. I like to babysit, but nobody needs babysitters right now. I don't have anything I could sell that people might want to buy. I REFUSE to do any of those online "make money now!" things, so please don't tell me to do that. Glaceau: That would work, except for the part where I said nowhere close to where I live is hiring. None of the restaraunts, stores, or any other businesses are hiring because of the economy. It's really a pain, but even if I got a permit, I wouldn't be able to find a job.

Where can I find a job with horses in Colorado Springs?
So, I wanted to get a job (I'm 15 but will be 16 in March) and I think it would be fun to work with horses. (I honestly don't have much experience. I wanted to take riding lessons but we're really tight on money right now. I thought if I helped in a stable it would be a lot of fun and I could learn a lot. Of course I don't think there are many people willing to hire someone in my situation...) But I honestly have no idea where to look... my Mom said it would have to be somewhere close to where we live (Black Forest would be good, or somewhere around there) so that she would be able to drive me since I don't have my license yet. Haha, I'm not expecting many answers... but any help would be great. (Also, how do I pick my favorite answer? Wow I feel really stupid... lol)

Try volunteering. Many barns do not hire many people. Maybe one or two if they are high class. I volunteered all of the time, it was really rewarding. And that's where I learnt a lot of tips and tricks. I loved it and I'm sure you would too, if all you really want is to be around horses and learn the trade. In some cases you can work for lessons. It all depends on the barn. If money is what you're after as well as horses, apply for a job at your local tack shop. http://www.pongoresume.com/ That is a great resume builder and is easy to work. Fill it out best you can. Really try and go for volunteering or for the job. Volunteering is your best bet. It's great experience and looks good on a resume too. :] Good luck. i live in illinois , and i was in the same situation as you ! I went to google and typed in "horse stables near "(put in your zip code)" " then i emailed or called the nearest stables from me and asked them if i could work in their barn (grooming, mucking, feeding, lunging etc.) for lessons or a shareboard (also knowledge) ! surprisingly i got a couple responses , some require more experience, some dont care. a lot of barns are tight in money now, so instead of paying they will exchange for a horse lease or lessons. in my opinion, thats better than money ! plus you learn a lot . i find that the smaller, more private barns are friendlier and you learn a lot more. but just be careful if your inexperienced and riding (my first barn didnt teach me much about riding and fell off about 3 times during trail riding , i blame it on myself though , i know i couldve gotten seriously injured) so seriously be careful and goodluck !

I'm in love with this man and don't want to lose him as I keep seeing how wondering (although challenging) our life could be, but I can't do it if he won't accept who he is and work on some of his issues. btw he's 30 if that matters

About Toyoto Rav4 Water Pump for wiper fluid not working in Minneapolis

Toyoto Rav4 Water Pump for wiper fluid not working in Minneapolis?
I drove my girlfriend's car from Los Angeles to Minneapolis. The pump was working fine all the way but it has stopped working after a week here. Is there any problem with some washer that I need to replace?

Unless you have winter proof washer fluid, your pump and lines have frozen water in it.

14 year olds cannot work in America at all officially. You are still a child and child labor laws are still in effect until the age of 16 or 17 depending on what city or state you are in. Unless you move to Asia or Africa, you can't make a resume and go on a job interview with a boss you don't know and be registered with the state as to having a job in a company or business...not even fast-food places.

Try McDonalds, Burger King, K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Rite Aid, Rita's, Wendy's and any other fast food joints...you need a working permit usually when under 18 but I worked at 16 so idk why you cant get a part time job at one of the above mentioned places.

You could submit your poetry here: http://wugallery.webnode.com/share-your-writing/ It's a fun way to read others writing and share your own. Good luck with your club!
